Health plan compliance from the inside

US health insurers are required to go through regulatory compliance reviews every year β€” CMS, state health departments. Each review is an initiative with its own team, vendor, documentation, deadlines, and specific requirements like HEDIS metrics or PIP programs. Dozens of these initiatives can run simultaneously.

The Remy team was building a platform for exactly these teams. The product solved real problems, but grew organically β€” alongside the codebase, without a designer. When I joined the project, the task was to figure out how three completely different user roles work with the same data.

First, understand what's actually going on

Jumping straight into screens would have been a mistake. The domain turned out to be dense: HEDIS, PIP, PMPM, CMS Auditor β€” a specific language, not generic GRC. The first weeks went into immersion: conversations with the founding team, working through real audit processes, understanding what "responding to a regulatory request" means in operational terms.

The key insight that became clear quickly: the product has three audiences with fundamentally different needs:

  • The executive wants to see the big picture: how many audits are active, what's at risk, how much budget has been spent.
  • The initiative manager works inside a specific program: runs the workplan, tracks deadlines, coordinates the team and vendor.
  • The auditor works with documents β€” uploads, reviews, leaves comments referencing regulatory codes.

How it works

All active compliance programs are organized by clinical category β€” Diabetes Care, Adult Screenings, Medication Adherence. Each category aggregates key metrics: Study Population, weekly Touchpoints with trend, PMPM, number of vendors.

Switching between views happens without losing context. The user picks the mode that fits the task.

Documents and review: where the real pain lives

Documents are the most painful part of the compliance process. The regulator rejects, the auditor comments, the team revises. Review History shows the full chain with specific reasons and references to regulatory codes. Each comment is tied to a role: Owner, CMS Auditor, External Auditor.

The Barriers tab is a structured stakeholder survey. Physicians, nurses, school principals respond to questions about the initiative β€” without switching between applications.
